The Painting Process
Step one
Recycled cardboard from used fish boxes are prepped by the penguin team. The cardboard is smoothly cut into different frame sizes and painted with different background colours and brush patterns.
Step two
The curious penguins watch on as the painting station is set up in the habitat using penguin-friendly paints and the previously prepped canvases. Different colours are spread throughout the painting station to give the penguins colour choices. Towels around the stations edge ensure the penguins feet are nice and dry before they are ready to paint.
Step three
The Kings and Gentoo's get painting! Choosing their favourite colours, they walk through the painting station adding unique footprints to their favourite canvases. They will often swish their tails across the paintings creating different patterns. The penguins will voluntarily paint together in groups or individually. The paint and canvas textures as well as the colours and interactions create positive mental and physical stimulation for the colony.
Step four
Each finished picture is left to dry and coated in a protective gloss for a long-lasting finish. They are then admired by the hard-working artists that created them. Each painting is sold via the Penguins For Penguins online store or in the Kelly Tarltons gift shop where all profits are donated to penguin-focused charities in New Zealand.
